Japanese game developer Gumi is expanding its crypto asset business from proprietary holdings to fund operations. The company disclosed that it will launch a private crypto fund of approximately 3 billion yen with SBI Financial Services on August 1st, primarily investing in Bitcoin and listed mainstream tokens, with a three-year term.

The fund is jointly operated by the two companies.

According to Gumi's announcement on July 28, the fund is named SBI Crypto Fund I, operates as an anonymous Japanese portfolio, and is managed by SBI Crypto Fund LLC. SBI Financial Services holds 51% of the operating company's shares, while Gumi's wholly-owned subsidiary gC Labs holds the remaining 49%.

In addition to the two initiators, Daiwa Securities Group and several unnamed investors have also pledged capital. However, Gumi has not disclosed the specific amounts pledged by each party, nor has it released more detailed asset allocation ratios for the fund.

Investing in Bitcoin and mainstream tokens

The company disclosed that the fund will primarily allocate its assets to Bitcoin and major listed altcoins, and will operate using strategies such as staking, portfolio rebalancing, and hedging. Gumi has not yet specified which tokens it intends to hold, nor has it disclosed the custodian, fee structure, or specific risk limits.

Gumi stated that the fund aims to bridge the gap between investment and liquidity provision, and to provide a practical model for Japanese companies participating in the crypto asset market. Participants also plan to accumulate performance data and test portfolio strategies that combine traditional and digital assets.

To accumulate records for future product development

Gumi stated that the data may be used in the future to research trust products and other managed products, but no products targeting the retail market have been announced or approved yet. The company also indicated that it hopes to establish a verifiable operational record before the possibility of opening up cryptocurrency ETFs in Japan.

The report mentions that Japanese regulators are discussing adjustments to the fund framework, and market expectations for the launch of Japan's first Bitcoin ETF have been extended to 2028, but this is not an official timetable.

The company's crypto assets increased by approximately 86% in one year.

In recent years, Gumi has incorporated crypto assets into its broader business and financial portfolio. The company disclosed that as of April 30, 2026, its crypto asset holdings amounted to ¥14.13 billion, up from ¥7.58 billion in the same period of the previous year, representing an increase of approximately 86%.

Gumi stated that its crypto business currently includes active XRP staking, portfolio management through Hinode Technologies, and investment fund operations. Previously, the company had also approved the purchase of 1 billion yen worth of Bitcoin and added XRP to its corporate treasury assets.

Additional information:Confirmed information indicates that SBI Crypto Fund I will begin operations as planned on August 1st, but the announcement did not disclose a fixed reporting schedule or whether additional investment would be accepted after the fund's launch.
