Copenhagen, Denmark, October 7, 2026 / PRNewswire / — Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners ( Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners , referred to as CIP ) announced that it has made a final investment decision ( FID ) regarding the Italian biomethane platform Via Verde through Advanced Bioenergy Fund II ( ABF II ). ABF II primarily invests in the development, construction, and operation of biogas plants across Europe, converting agricultural waste and other sustainable materials into biomethane.
The company stated that Via Verde is ABF II's first investment, and it also marks the entry of CIP into the Italian biomethane market. This investment will create local jobs and supply locally produced biomethane to replace imported fossil natural gas, thereby supporting Italy's efforts towards energy independence and decarbonization.
Via Verde has a development pipeline of 20 projects, strategically distributed across multiple regions of Italy, including Lombardy, Abruzzo, and Campania. It is estimated that each plant will process approximately 60,000 to 100,000 tons of agricultural waste per year.
Once all 20 of these projects are put into operation, the Via Verde platform is expected to provide approximately 1 terawatt-hour (TWh) of biomethane per year, which is equivalent to the annual natural gas consumption of about 60,000 Italian households.
Partners Andreas F and Brandt said regarding this new investment: “Via Verde marks our entry into one of Europe’s most attractive biomethane markets, enabling us to establish a solid foothold in Italy as we move towards the country’s biomethane targets for 2030. CIP will leverage its advanced expertise in bioenergy to support Via Verde’s experienced local team and their considerable project portfolio, laying a solid foundation for long-term growth. We believe that biomethane will play a key role in enhancing Italy’s energy independence and supporting its transition to a lower-carbon energy system.”
The company stated that, driven by favorable market fundamentals and policy support mechanisms, Via Verde is expected to take the lead in establishing a scaled presence in the Italian biomethane market and will support the expansion of local renewable gas production capacity.
