Key Points
- Apple's market value reaches $5.03 trillion, surpassing NVIDIA.
- NVIDIA fell 4.2% during the widespread selling of AI stocks.
- Wall Street is increasingly favoring companies with lower AI expenditure exposure.
As a massive sell-off in artificial intelligence stocks reshapes the landscape of major Wall Street companies, Apple has reclaimed its position as the world's most valuable listed company, surpassing NVIDIA.
According to a report by Bloomberg on October 30, Apple's market value at the close of trading on Friday was approximately $5.03 trillion, while NVIDIA's was $4.93 trillion. The difference between the two is $100 billion, and this marks Apple's return to the top spot for the first time since it briefly surpassed NVIDIA in late July.
This reversal is particularly noteworthy, as Apple's stock price also fell during trading on Friday. iPhone Manufacturer Apple saw a decline of 1.2%, but NVIDIA's more substantial drop of 4.2% was enough to change the rankings.
Apple regains a market value of $5 trillion; NVIDIA's stock price falls
On October 30, Apple's stock price closed at $344.63, while NVIDIA's stock price closed at $204.64.
This change occurs at a time when investors are increasingly distinguishing between two types of technology companies: one type is those that can generate cash flow from mature businesses, and the other type is those that are highly sensitive to infrastructure expenditures related to AI.
Apple's valuation surpassed $5 trillion earlier in October. Coinpaper had previously reported on this historic milestone, at a time when Apple benefited from strong iPhone demand as well as market concerns regarding AI related capital expenditures.
However, NVIDIA later regained the lead position until Friday's sell-off in the semiconductor sector changed the rankings between the two again.
The broader decline stems from the market's disappointment with the financial reports and performance guidance of Intel, Amazon, Alphabet, and Meta.
Intel's stock price tumbled by nearly 29%, and other semiconductor companies also saw declines. Investors are re-evaluating the financial sustainability of the investment boom in AI.
NVIDIA remains a major beneficiary of the demand for advanced computing hardware, but its exposure to technology companies' infrastructure budgets has become a sensitive point in the market.
Why Wall Street is Turning to Apple's AI Strategy
Apple's advantage does not lie in its abandonment of artificial intelligence.
On the contrary, the company has adopted a relatively restrained infrastructure strategy, relying more on its existing hardware ecosystem, edge-side computing, and partnerships.
This contrasts with the huge investments required to build the AI data center and cloud computing infrastructure.
Amazon recently disclosed that despite strong growth in cloud business revenue, its free cash flow over the past 12 months has dropped from a positive $14.8 billion to a negative $42.4 billion.
Coinpaper's analysis of Amazon highlights the pressures brought about by the company's continuously expanding infrastructure budget.
Alphabet also reported similar challenges, with its quarterly capital expenditure reaching $51.4 billion and its free cash flow turning negative.
Deteriorating cash flow indicates that investors are demanding clearer evidence of returns from the expenditures made by AI.
Meanwhile, as the importance of lending in infrastructure expansion increases, Microsoft has considered issuing $25 billion in bonds.
Apple faces a different set of risks, including iPhone demands, competition, and whether it can launch attractive AI features without falling behind its competitors.
Nevertheless, at this time of re-evaluation of the current market, its relatively lower exposure to infrastructure spending seems more attractive.
