A new personal AI assistant has arrived. Tab announced on Tuesday that it has officially ended its stealth mode, with a valuation of $300 million. (The company refused to disclose specific financing details.) Tab belongs to one of the emerging consumer-grade AI assistant trends, similar to the hit products Instinct and Meta. These products promise to help people with daily tasks such as booking restaurants and arranging trips.
Brennan Erbz, Stafford Schlitt, and Ammar Amdani began developing Tab earlier this year. Amdani explained to TechCrunch that the way this product works is as follows: users simply need to send a text message to Tab's assistant through iMessage or WhatsApp to tell it what kind of help they need – whether it's ordering groceries or selecting gifts for a birthday party – and Tab will take care of everything.
“You just send a message to it as if you were texting someone you trust, and it will help you take off the burden,” Amdani continued. “ Bills, reservations, those calls you’ve been putting off, remembering the people you love. It has its own phone number, computer, and wallet, so it won’t tell you how to do these things. It will do them for you directly.”
This round of investors includes SV Angel, Valar Ventures, and American Spirit. Amdani mentioned that the company is currently relying mainly on word-of-mouth for growth and plans to launch a new product soon.
He admits that to some extent, we have now entered a consumer-level AI competition. “Everyone is competing to make AI more powerful,” said Amdani.
“Your grandparents had family doctors, bankers; there were people who knew them and took care of them,” said Amdani. “Most of us no longer have those things nowadays.” He believes that personalized AI can play a role in this regard, but he noted that the winner of this consumer-level AI competition is not necessarily the company with the best demonstration results.
"The harder question, in our opinion, is whether you should let it enter your life." Any AI assistant that can read emails, make phone calls, or purchase goods, "its merits or demerits depend solely on the level of trust you place in it."
This is also the reason why Tab is built around this concept, he said. “Your data will never be used to train AI. Your bank card is stored in a safe, and Tab itself cannot see it. Nothing that cannot be undone will happen without your ‘consent.’ Ability is just a ticket to enter; trust is the real product.”
