According to CoinMeta, and as reported by aastocks, the Hong Kong police stated on the social media platform "Guardians of the Net" that they received over 50 reports of investment scams in the past week, involving losses of more than HKD 30 million. One retired woman in her sixties met a man who claimed to be interested in renting a property through a housing transaction platform. The man, posing as an investment expert, recommended cryptocurrency investments and sent her links to fake investment websites, enticing her to invest her funds with high returns. Following the man's instructions, she went to physical cryptocurrency exchange shops 20 times to purchase USDT and transferred it to a designated wallet, ostensibly for investment in ETH. She was able to withdraw some funds initially, but continued to make additional investments. It was not until she tried to withdraw money again that she was asked to pay approximately HKD 7 million in USDT as a tax. Only then did she realize she had been scammed, resulting in a total loss of over HKD 4.5 million.
