Cryptography hacker convicted in New York for stealing millions of dollars to buy Pokémon cards

According to CoinMeta, Jonathan Spalletta (36 years old, from Maryland) was convicted of theft by a New York jury for stealing $53.3 million in April 2021 by exploiting a vulnerability. He used this vulnerability to withdraw approximately $1.4 million multiple times and admitted to this behavior two weeks later. Spalletta subsequently used some of the funds to purchase Pokémon cards and other luxury items, including a first-edition Pokémon Basic Set worth $750,000 and Black Lotus Magic Cards worth $500,000. The prosecution stated that when he was arrested, items such as Black Lotus cards and Lunar Flyer fabric, as well as $31 million in cryptocurrencies, were found at his home. The judge will decide on his sentence, which could be up to 30 years.
