EU warns crypto wallets of serious quantum attack risks

CoinMeta data: The European Police Organization (Europol) warns that cryptocurrency wallets are at serious risk of quantum attacks, particularly as wallet keys are seen as a major vulnerability to future quantum computing attacks. Europol calls on crypto developers and wallet providers to adopt post-quantum security measures to address these potential threats. The report indicates that encrypted data collected today may be subject to an attack strategy of "collect first, then decrypt later." Europol explains in two new reports how quantum computing could pose a threat to crypto assets and sensitive data. The reports point out that the keys that control crypto wallets and approve transactions are the main risks; powerful quantum computers could use exposed public keys to find private keys. More than 4.3 million BTC (worth over $360 billion) are stored in old Bitcoin addresses with exposed public keys, including approximately 1.1 million BTC associated with Satoshi Nakamoto. Modern Bitcoin addresses provide stronger protection, but public keys can still become visible while transactions are waiting for confirmation. Future quantum computers could exploit this window to attack funds. Therefore, Europol is urging developers and wallet providers to switch to post-quantum security as soon as possible to avoid rushed security upgrades in the future.
