The US Department of Justice cites the Bitcoin Fog case to oppose the Roman Storm acquittal request

According to CoinMeta, the U.S. Department of Justice cited an appeal ruling in a case involving Roman Sterlingov, operator Bitcoin Fog, in a document submitted on Monday as additional evidence against the request for a not-guilty verdict for Roman Storm, the developer of Tornado Cash. The U.S. prosecution stated that this ruling supports their claim that the Southern District of New York is the appropriate venue for the trial. The prosecution argued that Shakeeb Ahmed used Tornado Cash in an apartment in Manhattan, and that these activities were sufficient to determine New York as the venue for the trial regarding charges of money laundering and conspiracy to transfer unlicensed funds. Judge Katherine Polk Failla heard arguments for a not-guilty verdict in April 2026 but has not yet made a decision. In August 2025, the jury found Roman Storm guilty of conspiracy to transfer unlicensed funds, but could not reach a consensus on the charges of money laundering and sanctions conspiracy; a retrial is scheduled for April 26, 2027.
