EIA predicts record electricity demand in the United States in 2026 and 2027

It is expected that electricity demand will increase from 419.5 billion kilowatt-hours in 2025 to 428.8 billion kilowatt-hours in 2026, and reach 435.6 billion kilowatt-hours in 2027. Factors driving the growth in electricity demand include the use of AI data centers and cryptocurrencies, as well as the increasing role of electricity in heating and transportation. Commercial electricity sales are expected to reach record highs, with commercial sales projected at 154.9 billion kilowatt-hours in 2026, residential sales at 154.1 billion kilowatt-hours, and industrial electricity usage at 105.5 billion kilowatt-hours. EIA also predicts that the average wholesale electricity price in 2026 will be $52 per megawatt-hour, an increase of 11% from 2025.
