According to CoinMeta, Adam Ezzain, who styled himself as a "godfather," was sentenced to six years in prison for hiring a deputy of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department to harass people. He was also convicted of stealing over $37 million from Meta and using cryptocurrency custodians to hide his profits. U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson also ordered him to pay $23.4 million in damages. In January 2025, Ezzain pleaded guilty to conspiracy, online fraud, and tax evasion, and has been in custody since September 2024. The case involved fraud committed between 2020 and 2022 through a business management account at Meta, which resulted in customers of Meta being overcharged.
