U.S. savings rate drops to a 2022 low: Bitcoin's role as a hedging tool remains to be verified

CoinMeta data: The personal savings rate in the United States dropped to 4.1% in August 2026, the lowest level since November 2022. This decline raises a poignant question: Can Bitcoin serve as a hedge against the reduced buffers of households? The decrease in savings rates indicates that households are depleting their reserves to maintain their consumption levels. The reading in August was 0.5% lower than in July, and it has fallen by 1.6 percentage points since January 2025. Excluding the inflationary shocks of 2022, this is the lowest level since 2008. Persistent inflation in housing, food, and energy continues to squeeze household budgets. Although spending remains relatively strong in the short term, this strength comes at the cost of savings. For most Americans, this level means that their buffer space is getting smaller and smaller in the face of unemployment, medical bills, or other emergency expenses. Bitcoin saw its first full-year increase in the third quarter, with a rise of 42.71%. Nevertheless, BTC is still trading about 4% below its starting price of $87,498 in August 2026.
