MetaMask Security Incident Triggers the Exit of 17,000 Ethereum Verifiers
2026-10-01 23:46:55
CoinMeta US stock data: MetaMask withdrew nearly 17,000 Ethereum validators from active staking due to a security incident, affecting over 500,000 ETH. On-chain analysis indicates that the intruders redirected validator rewards rather than the underlying staking funds. MetaMask stated that no known threats were detected in their wallet products, and customers' ability to retrieve their keys remained under their control. The incident was disclosed on September 30th, and MetaMask began coordinating with customers and partners for the withdrawal of validators. Bitquery reconstructed the event using Ethereum data and found that an unauthorized wallet received block tips from 18 MetaMask-operated validators, with a total transfer amount of only 0.36 ETH. MetaMask investigations are still ongoing, with a focus on working closely with affected partners to take appropriate measures to protect users.
