According to CoinMeta, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) launched a comprehensive investigation into several leading AI laboratories on September 30, 2026, including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Metr. The investigation aims to assess the potential harm that these companies' technologies may pose to consumers, particularly as Washington is imposing multiple regulatory pressures on the same industry. The initiation of the investigation coincides with the self-imposed deadline for provable reasoning safety set by Anthropic and follows the disclosure in the companies' submitted S-1 prospectuses of a $518 billion computing commitment and the risks it poses to human survival. Andrew Ferguson, chairman of FTC, stated that the investigation will target any unfair or deceptive practices that violate FTC legislation, and plans to issue civil investigation requests to the executives of the target companies, compelling them to provide testimony and documents.
