CoinMeta data: El Salvador has launched a state-backed stablecoin application named Sivar, which allows eligible U.S. users to send digital dollars to verified recipients. The application charges $2 per transfer and settles payments on the Base network at Coinbase. More than 25,000 Salvadorans had registered before its launch. According to data from the central bank, in 2025, Salvadoran families received nearly $10 billion in remittances from abroad. The application uses stablecoins for transfers; the country first adopted Bitcoin as a payment method five years ago. The launch of Sivar does not imply that the country is selling its Bitcoin holdings. Users can fund transfers using debit cards through Coinbase's Onramp, and each user receives a non-hosted wallet within Sivar. Sivar combines payment, authentication, and community features; users can verify their identity through El Salvador's government login service and join groups related to their addresses.
