Citi Expands Cooperation with Coinbase to Connect Fiat and Stablecoin Payments
2026-09-30 15:22:14
According to CoinMeta, Citibank has expanded its collaboration with Coinbase to launch two products that are the first of their kind in the United States, aimed at connecting fiat banking services with stablecoin payments. Citibank states that Coinbase virtual accounts utilize Citibank’s virtual wallet, allowing customers to enjoy functions similar to those of a bank account during payments, with fiat currency automatically converting to stablecoins. Citibank’s Spring product enables institutional clients to accept stablecoin payments at checkout through Coinbase and automatically convert them back to fiat currency, with Citibank acting as the record-keeping bank for settlement. Merchants can reach over 150 million stablecoin holders without having to hold, store, or manage digital assets themselves. Coinbase, the head of the Coinbase infrastructure product, pointed out that there has always been a need for a fast and compliant bridge between fiat and stablecoins for customers building on Coinbase, and Citibank provides exactly that solution. This expansion builds upon an earlier partnership from October 2025, at a time when regulations regarding stablecoins are becoming increasingly stringent in both the United States and the European Union.
