Australian Central Bank raises interest rates to 15-year high, warns of further increases possible
2026-09-29 16:51:50
According to CoinMeta, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) raised the cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.6%, which is the highest level since 2011. The decision was unanimously supported by all nine members of the board of directors, marking the fourth interest rate hike in 2026. Policymakers stated that if inflation does not cool down, further policy tightening may be necessary in the future. RBA noted in a statement that the intensification of conflicts in the Middle East has led to global energy prices far exceeding the levels predicted in August. Reports indicate that Australia's headline inflation has experienced significant fluctuations this year, reaching 4.6% in March due to a 32.8% increase in fuel prices. Although the inflation rate dropped to 3.5% in July, core inflation rose from 3.3% to 3.6%. RBA stated that they will continue to take necessary measures to stabilize inflation back within the target range.
