A major innovation was the relocation of validator coordination off-chain. Technical voting transactions once accounted for 75% of the Solana block capacity; now, they are aggregated into encrypted BLS certificates, freeing up network capacity for user transactions and reducing node operation costs. The activation of the new protocol on Devnet ( Alpenswitch ) took place after a 17-minute countdown in the 1167th epoch, with preliminary deployment already conducted on the test network the previous day. The new consensus adopts a "20+20" fault-tolerance model, ensuring stability even if one-fifth of the validators go offline.
