Kazakhstan promotes crypto mining companies to use associated gas for power generation

Kazakhstan is promoting the use of residual associated gas from oil fields by crypto mining companies to generate electricity for the mines. This initiative aims to reduce the burning of natural gas flares, alleviate pressure on the power grid, and attract mining companies to return to the region. Mining companies will bear the costs of investing in the necessary infrastructure, while oil fields can earn revenue by selling the natural gas that was previously burned off, thereby mitigating the constraints on crude oil production caused by the disposal of associated gas. Currently, about 40 to 60 oil fields are burning associated gas, and the Ministry of Energy is working together with the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development to establish a relevant legal framework.
