Russia warns crypto investors: Stablecoins may be frozen
2026-09-23 14:45:06
According to CoinMeta, the Russian Ministry of Finance has warned domestic crypto investors that if foreign stablecoin issuers such as USDT or USDC freeze their assets, the government will not provide compensation. Approximately 20 million Russians hold cryptocurrencies worth about $44 billion. The new regulations require users to report foreign digital asset infrastructure. Deputy Minister of Finance Ivan Chebeskov stated that investors holding stablecoins should not expect compensation, especially when they are held in private wallets, as issuers may still freeze the tokens. This warning highlights the risks associated with holding foreign-issued stablecoins, particularly after Russia introduced a new digital asset framework that came into effect on September 1, 2026.
