MoonPay has released PayBox, a payment vault integrated with Claude and ChatGPT. Users can deposit encrypted wallets and payment cards into it, and an AI agent will initiate the transaction process, which is then confirmed using a passkey on the device.

This product attempts to fill the gap in chatbots' ability to "recommend but not pay." Previously, Claude and ChatGPT could help users compare prices, plan trips, or filter products, but when it came to actual payment, users still needed to be redirected to a browser or payment page to complete the operation manually.

The first batch supports catering, air tickets, and on-chain operations.

MoonPay stated that PayBox already supported scenarios such as restaurant reservations, flight bookings, and shopping on major e-commerce platforms upon its launch. In addition to daily consumption, users can also use the product to complete token exchanges, cross-chain transfers, and transfer funds to DeFi protocols such as Aave.

In terms of on-chain support, PayBox is initially compatible with Solana and 7 Ethereum-compatible chains, including Ethereum, Hyperliquid, Tempo, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum, and Polygon.

It also integrates the x402 payment protocol. Originally developed by Coinbase and later donated to the Linux Foundation, this protocol is currently supported by Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Shopify, AWS, and Anthropic, with the goal of enabling AI agents to initiate payments directly to services that support the protocol.

The transaction will be executed after user confirmation.

The basic process of PayBox is that users first submit a request in Claude or ChatGPT, the AI agent arranges the transaction accordingly, and then the user confirms it through the passkey on their mobile phone or device, and the funds are then transferred.

MoonPay states that its AI agent does not have sole control over user funds and cannot independently sign transactions. The company says the product design focuses on separating "automatic execution" from "user control," avoiding the direct transfer of fund custody to a single platform or agent.

The underlying technology comes from Sodot

PayBox's underlying technology comes from Sodot. This Israeli key management company was acquired by MoonPay in April of this year in an all-stock deal worth approximately $100 million.

MoonPay stated that Sodot's technology currently provides security for over $50 billion in assets and more than 10 million wallets, with clients including eToro and BitGo.

In terms of security architecture, wallet keys are split using MPC and then stored in the TEE environment. According to MoonPay, this means that neither MoonPay, the AI agent, nor a single device or session can obtain the complete key or a single signature on its own.

In addition, card payments are processed through Visa's agentic commerce protocol. MoonPay claims this design allows AI to complete payments without seeing the actual card number, reducing the risk of payment credential leakage and reuse.

MoonPay continues to advance its AI wallet strategy this year.

PayBox is not MoonPay's first move in the field of AI payments. In March of this year, the company launched an open wallet standard for AI agents, which received support from PayPal, the Ethereum Foundation, and the Solana Foundation.

In May, MoonPay launched an app that allowed users to purchase crypto assets within ChatGPT, but at that time users still needed to be redirected to the checkout page to complete the payment. In June, the company further launched a desktop app that directly connected Claude and Codex to the crypto wallet.

With the release of PayBox, MoonPay is integrating AI dialogue, payment confirmation, and on-chain execution into a single process, with the goal of enabling AI agents not only to provide advice but also to complete actual transactions after user authorization.
