ENS Just Got Smacked Down By An Unstoppable Legal Action

Unstoppable Domains won a major legal case just a year ago when the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) rejected a challenge from ENS Labs. At the time, ENS Labs had tried to cancel Unstoppable’s patent for “Resolving Blockchain Domains.”

On 22 November 2024, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board ruled that ENS Labs didn’t have a strong enough case to overturn the patent. The decision backed Unstoppable’s outlook towards tech and its responsible approach towards intellectual property.

Since then, Unstoppable Domains has refrained from using the patent to block or sue anyone. On the contrary, it has stuck to its promise of supporting open innovation in Web3.

According to Unstoppable Domains, it aims to protect its ideas while also encouraging collaboration and growth across the blockchain domain space.

“We are proud that the USPTO affirmed the integrity of our intellectual property,” said Matt Gould, Founder and CEO of Unstoppable Domains. “This victory underscores the originality of our technology and our continued commitment to responsibly advancing the Web3 naming ecosystem.”

USPTO Says Unstoppable Domains Blockchain Patent Still Stands

For anyone who is lost in the sauce, with the non-stop crypto updates 24/7, here is the rundown of this case. The ‘344 Patent was granted on 17 January 2023. It patent covers a functionality that lets blockchain domain names work through smart contracts.

Meaning, this tech makes Unstoppable Domains’.crypto registry possible, allowing people to use easy-to-read names instead of long blockchain addresses. Moreover, it skips the requirement for a middleman.

Some of its other standout features include gasless transactions, smart contract resolution, and decentralized domain management. The tools have been a part of Unstoppable’s arsenal since 2020.

Now, ENS Labs contested this patent by filing a petition against all 20 of its claims. The USPTO, however, could not find any depth to the petitions and, after reviewing the case, concluded that ENS didn’t provide enough evidence to move forward.

Further, the board ruled that ENS hadn’t proven its reference material as prior art or that it undermined Unstoppable’s technology. With that ruling, the case was officially closed.

Sandy Carter, Chief Business Officer of Unstoppable Domains said, “Protecting our IP is the only responsible way to ensure that the Web3 industry can continue to innovate for our community and partners. We will continue to build open, interoperable infrastructure that empowers developers, users, and partners around the world.”

Why Does This Ruling Matter?

The ruling vindicated Web3 and the blockchain industry by confirming legal protection for blockchain-based domain naming systems.

The ruling also reinforced Unstoppable Domains’ role as an industry leader when it comes to building tools for decentralized identity and Web3 infrastructure.

For the uninitiated, Unstoppable Domains, founded in 2018, is an accredited registrar that helps bring people into both traditional DNS and Web3. It creates blockchain-based domain names to give users full ownership over their digital identity without any renewal fees.

Instead of using long, complicated crypto wallet addresses, people can simply link their names to their wallets and apps, making everyday use of blockchain much easier.

The Sandbox Suspends Cross-Chain Bridge Between Base and BNB Chain: Unsecured SAND Why Can't We Just Look at the Coin Minting Volume?
On August 22, The Sandbox stated that a vulnerability was discovered in its SAND cross-chain bridge on Base and BNB Smart Chain. Attackers were able to mint tokens without the corresponding Ethereum SAND locking support. The team subsequently suspended the related cross-chain functionality and claimed that the vulnerability had been contained. The core issue of this incident is not merely the simple "minting" of additional tokens, but rather the disruption of the most fundamental accounting relationships between cross-chain assets: the mapped tokens on the target chain should correspond one-to-one with the assets locked or destroyed on the source chain; once unsecured minting occurs, the market can no longer assume equivalence between SAND on different chains.

UK retail sales fell by 0.5% in July: Why hasn't this single-month decline erased three months of growth?
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) of the UK announced on August 21 that retail sales in July fell by 0.5% month-on-month, marking the first monthly decline in three months; however, sales were still 1.6% higher than in July 2025. Over the three months to July, there was a 1.1% increase compared to the previous three months, and year-on-year, there was a 3.0% growth. These figures reflect both a short-term weakening and an improvement over a longer period. It is not appropriate to conclude that consumer spending has deteriorated based solely on the -0.5% figure, nor can one claim that household demand has strongly recovered just because of the year-on-year positive growth.

Solana Mainnet Latency Drops to 350 Milliseconds: Faster Confirmation is Just the First Step Towards 200 Milliseconds
The mainnet of Solana has now enabled 350-millisecond slots, reducing the original target of about 400 milliseconds by 50 milliseconds. This is the first phase of its "Reduced Slot Times" upgrade roadmap, not the final completion. The official plan is to proceed in steps of 350, 300, 250, and 200 milliseconds, with each step being enabled through independent feature switches, and whether to continue depending on network performance such as block skip rates. Understanding these phased updates as controlled speed improvements is more realistic than directly claiming that "Solana has entered the 200-millisecond era."

Microsoft Receives the First Batch of Mass-Produced Vera Rubin Systems: AI Hardware Competition Enters the Rack-Level Delivery Phase
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently stated that the first batch of mass-produced NVIDIA Vera Rubin systems has arrived at Microsoft's data centers. This news is easily simplified to "another generation of GPU has arrived," but what is truly noteworthy is that the delivery unit has shifted from a single chip to a complete rack-level system. Vera Rubin is not just the name of an accelerator; it refers to a platform composed of CPU, GPU, networking chips, switching chips, and liquid cooling facilities. For cloud providers, the ability to integrate this system into their data centers and ensure stable power supply, cooling, and networking is far more indicative of true commercialization than merely receiving sample chips.

EnvHarness Bringing the static environment to life: The bottleneck in AI proxy training is shifting from the model to the environment
After large models become agents, the training challenge is no longer just about getting them to answer a question correctly, but about enabling them to learn to observe, trial and error, use tools, and adjust their strategies based on the results in a series of continuous actions. A paper published on August 20th, titled "_EnvHarness: Awakening Static Worlds for Agent Learning", focuses on a often underestimated aspect: many existing environments are only suitable for one-time evaluations and lack the feedback, course difficulty, and controllable perturbations required for training. The approach proposed by the research team, EnvHarness, is not about creating another massive virtual world, but rather about making adjustments without altering the underlying logic of the environment.
