Hyundai announces a recall involving nearly 30,000 units of the Kona Electric model. The reason is that a software error may prevent the airbags from deploying in the event of a collision.
Modern recalls for Kona Electric and Veloster N vehicle models
Hyundai stated in a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on November 4th that the company is recalling certain models of Kona Electric vehicles produced from 2019 to 2023, as well as Veloster N vehicles produced from 2019 to 2022.
A total of 37,901 vehicles are affected by this recall, including 29,058 Kona Electric and 8,843 Veloster N.
According to the files submitted to NHTSA, the issue stems from a software error in the airbag control unit (ACU). This error may cause the airbag fault indicator light (MIL) to illuminate and disable the airbag system under certain driving conditions.

When the system writes data to the ACU memory, if a system restart or power outage occurs, the data may be corrupted. In such a case, the airbag MIL will light up to alert the driver.

Car owners can take their vehicles to the nearest dealer, where the dealer will update the ACU software for free.
Hyundai Motor expects to send out notification letters to car owners on January 1, 2027. In the meantime, if car owners have any questions or concerns, they can contact Hyundai Motor's customer service at 1-855-371-9460. The recall number for Hyundai Motor is 311.
