South Korea announces that the introduction of a capital gains tax on cryptocurrencies will be postponed to 2029, extending the tax-free period by two years. According to yna.co.kr, authorities plan to promote the linkage of exchange data with U.S. data while strengthening regulatory oversight.

South Korean Finance Minister Lee Jong announced this proposal on Thursday, acknowledging that the government has for the fourth time postponed this controversial tax policy.

This policy was initially planned to take effect in January 2022, with the intention of imposing a 22% tax on all cryptocurrency-related earnings exceeding 2.5 million Korean won, including local income tax.

Regulatory Uncertainty and Market Impact

Although the proposed extension may bring some relief to South Korea's cryptocurrency market and even support local trading activities, it remains an important risk factor for both local and overseas investors.

Officials believe that implementing this tax before the international information sharing system is operational could put local exchanges at a disadvantage and make it more complicated to enforce laws against overseas trading activities.

The future tax burden will not be abolished. Spending more time establishing a comprehensive tax network is more likely to impose additional restrictions on investors in the future, rather than implementing them prematurely in the presence of various legal loopholes.

The government also intends to introduce relevant provisions that would allow investors to carry forward losses from cryptocurrency investments for up to three years, which could reduce taxable income in subsequent periods.

Further encryption regulation remains a focus.

South Korea will also establish a separate working group to further refine tax regulations and hopes to simplify the reporting requirements for investors, as the reporting processes for digital asset traders and exchange participants are relatively complex.

It is expected that the relevant legislative amendments will be submitted to the National Assembly in 2027.

Authorities stated that they are continuously coordinating with the Financial Services Commission to accelerate the legislation on digital assets in order to improve transparency and strengthen investor protection.

Overall, this proposed extension is more of a transitional phase. Although it will lead to stricter tax enforcement, it should help enhance the competitiveness of the digital asset market. However, for retail investors, this also adds another barrier, which may further deter new funds from entering the industry.

If this level is successfully broken through, $0.0806 will become the next target.
