Netflix indicates that this week, a person who has previously worked at Google, Snap, Meta, Microsoft, and Yahoo has been hired to serve as the head of the advertising platform. Last month, the company lowered its annual advertising revenue forecast by $300 million to $2.7 billion, citing delays in the launch of advertising products and integration with partners. However, it still expects the advertising business to grow by 80% this year.

Netflix realizes that its advertising business needs to be accelerated, so it is bringing in a highly recognized advertising technology operator to speed up this process.

The company stated this week that it has hired Darshan Kantak to serve as the head of the advertising platform ( VP of its ads platform ). Kantak has previously held positions at Google , Snap , Meta , Microsoft , and Yahoo; the only thing missing from his resume is Amazon. A former colleague told me that he is a leader who pays attention to details, is accustomed to solving complex problems, and is willing to get his hands dirty himself.

One of his top priorities upon taking office will be to get the advertising technology stack of Netflix up and running. Last month, Netflix lowered its annual advertising revenue forecast by $300 million to $2.7 billion, citing delays in the launch of advertising products and integration with partners. ( Netflix still expects its advertising business to grow by 80% this year.)

The CEO of the digital advertising company Publisher Collective, Andrew Buckman, stated that he used to work with Kantak at Yahoo and believes that Kantak has the capability to help identify these key moments.

Buckman recalls the experience from 20 years ago when Kantak helped him at Yahoo. At that time, the company was launching a new search advertising platform, and Buckman was responsible for reconfiguring the pricing of search terms in various European markets.

Buckman missed one integration.

“I ruined Finland,” he said.

At that time, Kantak was in charge of the global launch process, while Finland accounted for only a small portion of the total revenue. He sat next to Buckman's computer for two hours, and together they sorted through the data until they finally resolved the issue.

“I’ve always thought he’s the smartest person in the room, but he never really admits it,” said Buckman, “He’s always willing to work on different problems with you, roll up his sleeves, and find the right solutions together along the way.”

Former colleague and current Senior Vice President of Mozilla, Graham Mudd stated that Kantak played a key role in developing products that helped Facebook transition to a data-driven performance advertising business, whereas Facebook previously focused mainly on brand advertising. This should help Netflix make progress in seeking a diversified advertising client base, Mudd said.

“He knows this approach,” said Mudd, “if you’re looking for someone who knows exactly what to do, how to motivate the team to achieve their goals, and has the experience to understand that ‘if we do X, then Y will happen’, he is very suitable.”

Kantak stated in a declaration that what attracted them to Netflix was the opportunity to use technology to ensure that advertisements were "relevant and popular" among members, and to make advertisements "more innovative and efficient" through technical tools.

As for the specific tasks following Kantak, Netflix stated during the latest financial report conference call that its advertising priorities include launching new forms of advertising, as well as increasing the availability of measurement and reporting tools. Next year, the company plans to expand its ad subscription service to 15 new countries.

The former Chief Commercial Officer, Iv, stated that he remembered Kantak being in charge of "tricky problems that required a lot of mental effort," such as the continuously expanding market business of Yahoo, as well as developing early programmatic advertising products after the acquisition of the Right Media exchange in 2007.

"When I think about CTV, high-quality videos, and the broader market, there is still a lot of work to be done by all these participants in terms of how to create experiences and markets on a global scale in a thoughtful manner," Markman said when discussing the advertising opportunities for Netflix. "_Darshan has done it before, and they have succeeded as well."
