A joint venture worth $5.8 billion between Rivian and Volkswagen Group is expanding into the field of AI assistants.
According to the third-quarter investor presentation released on Thursday by Rivian, Rivian is currently licensing some aspects of its AI voice assistant technology to Volkswagen Group as part of a broader joint venture project.
Rivian has not disclosed the licensing fees or payment terms, nor has it specified which Volkswagen models will utilize this technology. However, this AI assistant, which was recently introduced on the Rivian model, may make its debut on Volkswagen's low-cost electric vehicle ID EVERY1. This small four-door hatchback is expected to become the first Volkswagen model to use the Rivian software and electrical architecture under this joint venture project established in 2024.
The joint venture project between Rivian and Volkswagen Group has previously expanded at least once in terms of funding scale. Initially, the jointly announced project was valued at up to $5 billion, but within a few months, Volkswagen increased its commitment to investing up to $5.8 billion in Rivian by 2027. The initial collaboration was officially implemented through an independent company and commenced in November 2024, with a focus on integrating Rivian's electrical architecture and software into Volkswagen's next-generation vehicle models.
Rivian describes incorporating the assistant technology elements of AI into this collaboration as "a testament to the scalability of the platform we have built internally."
It took two years to develop the AI assistant, which was first showcased last year. The development process lasted longer than anticipated, and the assistant was finally launched in September 2026 for its flagship models R1S SUV and R1T pickups, as well as the new mid-size R2 SUV.
Rivian has high hopes for its AI assistant, which allows drivers and passengers to interact with the vehicle and control certain functions. Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe stated in an interview with TechCrunch at the Disrupt 2026 conference that the company has established its own internal agentic framework, which is capable of understanding what operations users intend to perform when speaking to the vehicle and routing them to the corresponding parts of the car's software. He said that this capability could ultimately allow Rivian vehicles to be operated by AI agents created by other companies, including Anthropic.
This internal AI assistant program also aligns with the direction of Rivian to promote deeper vertical integration – the company emphasized this strategy in its third-quarter financial report.
"Our firm focus on vertical integration remains our core competitive advantage, enabling Rivian to seamlessly unify our hardware and software architectures and bring significant value to our customers," the company stated during the investor presentation.
This strategy prompted Rivian to carry out a comprehensive transformation of its flagship models, the R1T pickup truck and the R1S SUV. Adjustments were made to everything from the battery pack and suspension system to the electrical architecture, sensor stack, and software user interface. Rivian stated that its new electrical architecture system and computing platform have significantly reduced the amount of wiring harnesses used, and decreased the number of electronic control units used to control the vehicle from 17 to 7. Rivian believes that this foundation will enable them to create vehicles that can meet the computational demands required for advanced software and autonomous driving.
This is also why the public has taken a liking to this technology. The company has always struggled to provide customers with vehicles that are as modern and software-centric as those of Tesla's competitors.
Rivian emphasized its vertical integration logic multiple times during the investor presentation, pointing out that by controlling the entire technology stack, which includes computing, sensors, display, lighting, and sound, "it can introduce fast updates to OTA that cover the entire vehicle, and these updates go far beyond basic functions."
