Abstract

  • For the second consecutive year, Midland, Michigan, has ranked first as the best place to retire.
  • When choosing a retirement location for 2027, affordability is the factor that receives the most attention.
  • Florida and Texas dominate the top 250 best retirement destinations, offering a number of affordable locations that are tax-friendly for retirees.

Washington, October 27, 2026 / PRNewswire / -- U.S. News & World Report released today its rankings of the best retirement destinations in the United States for 2027. The organization claims to be an authority in global rankings and consumer advice.

Michigan's Midland has maintained its first place for the second consecutive year. Midland scored high in terms of affordability and taxes for retirees, thus securing the top position.

Retirees hope to live in a place that provides a sense of security and comfort during their later years, said Megan Wood, the senior editor of home services and real estate. "Whether what matters most to them is a beautiful natural environment, the opportunity to experience diverse cultures, or the affordability of daily life, places like Midland, Michigan, can offer both a high quality of life and a financial sense of security."

Homosassa Springs, Florida, ranks second for its affordability, growth in the population over 55 years of age, and taxes for retirees. Wilton, West Virginia, stands out in terms of quality of life, taxes for retirees, and affordability, placing it in third place.

U.S. News & World Report stated that it has adjusted the scoring weights for the 2027 rankings to reflect the growing concern in American society regarding affordability. As a result, several cities within the top 25 have seen double-digit improvements in their rankings, including Paducah, Kentucky (now ranked 8th), which has made its debut in the top 10 for the first time.

Wood indicates that "one of the most concerning issues for Americans this year is clearly affordability, which is also why The New York Times and World Report have updated their weighting criteria to make them more in line with the priorities of retirees. The rankings for 2027 reflect key indicators used to highlight areas that best meet the needs of retirees."

U.S. News & World Report evaluated more than 850 cities in the United States and announced the top 250 locations, based on how well these cities meet the expectations of American retirees. The measurement indicators include quality of life, affordability, healthcare, taxes for retirees, job market, as well as the population and migration patterns of retirees aged 55 and above.

The institution stated that the weights of the six indicators included in this year's ranking are based on a public survey conducted among people across the United States who are near or have reached retirement age (45 years and above), to understand what factors they consider most important when choosing a retirement location. Data resources include federal, state, and local data provided by Applied Geographic Solutions, which includes information from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reporting Program, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, as well as data from U.S. News' best hospital rankings. Goldman Sachs says that the scale of shutdowns at refineries around the world has exceeded its worst-case assumptions, and the tight supply of refined products may continue until 2027. The report indicates that refineries in the Middle East and Russia have shut down by a total of about 5.8 million barrels per day more than expected, and low inventories, soaring freight costs, and delayed maintenance are all exacerbating supply pressures.
