U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that he had proposed to Google to rename the Atlantic Ocean on Google Maps, but Google CEO Sundar Pichai rejected this idea. Trump also mentioned that Google had previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario as “American Gulf” and “American Lake” in the map labels for U.S. users.

After U.S. President Donald Trump brought his plan to rename the Atlantic Ocean to Google, it seems he encountered resistance.

On Wednesday, during a rally in South Carolina, Trump said that he had considered putting his name or "America" on one of the two oceans that flank the United States: the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

“I will not place the names of Trump or the United States on any other oceans except these two major ones,” he said to the crowd.

Then he said that he called Google to inquire whether such a change could be made on Google Maps.

After the president signed the executive order, the tech giant had previously changed the labels for its American users referring to the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario to "American Bay" and "American Lake," respectively.

Trump recounted when he directly proposed this idea to Pichai, saying, "Sundar, I'm thinking about the Atlantic. Can you handle it?"

“No, no, no. I won’t do it this time,” Trump quoted Pichai as saying. “The oceans are different, sir. They cover many countries. Please don’t ask us to do that.”

“So I guess I’ll give up,” Trump said to the crowd. “Should I give up?” He then answered his own question, “I think we’ll keep the name ‘Atlantic’ after all.”

Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

This is not the first time Trump has proposed renaming oceans. At a rally in Tennessee at the beginning of October, he suggested calling the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean "Trump Sea" or "American Ocean."

He also considered renaming a river, calling New Mexico “New America,” and renaming the Strait of Hormuz “Trump Strait.”

Although these ideas are still in the proposal stage, after the name changes were recorded in federal records, Google Maps has indeed adopted the designations "American Bay" and "American Lake" for users in the United States. Users in Mexico and Canada still see the original names for the bay and lake, respectively. Users in other parts of the world will see the original names, followed by Trump's new names in parentheses.

These changes also present challenges for those who create maps for an international audience. Joseph Wright, CEO of Replogle Globes, told Joshua Nellken-Zitzer of Business Insider after the order to rename Lake Ontario was issued: “Whether the international community accepts it is also a factor, as some countries may not agree to it.”

"We sell globes all over the world."

For now, it seems that Trump's ideas regarding the Atlantic have run aground before even reaching Google Maps.
