Tesla's third-quarter operating profit fell 56% year-on-year to $718 million, below Wall Street's expectations; revenue remained largely unchanged, but expenses related to AI, decreased regulatory compliance income, and weaker gross margins in energy storage dragged down earnings. The company's adjusted earnings per share were 48 cents, higher than analysts' forecasts.

Tesla is still selling a considerable number of cars, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to earn the same amount of money from these sales.

The car manufacturer led by Elon Musk announced on Wednesday that its revenue in the third quarter decreased by 56% year-on-year to $718 million, falling short of Wall Street's forecast of $746.3 million; however, sales were roughly unchanged at $28.05 billion.

Tesla stated that the pressure on profits mainly stems from higher operating expenses related to its investment in artificial intelligence, Musk's preference for “SI”/“Super Intelligence”, as well as other research and development projects. Declining regulatory compliance income and weaker gross margins in its energy storage business also contributed to the decline in profitability, while lower vehicle prices affected revenue.

However, not all the news is bad for Tesla's profits. The company still remains profitable, and earnings per share exceeded expectations. Tesla reported that adjusted earnings per share were 48 cents, which is higher than the 44 cents that analysts generally anticipated.

The new quarter has already triggered some fluctuations.

The story of Tesla continues to unfold in real time, and since the fourth quarter of October, the company has been quite busy this month.

On Tuesday, during the financial report conference call of SpaceX, Musk stated that both Tesla and SpaceX have established committees to study the possibility of a potential merger. Both companies are led by Musk, who holds billions of dollars in stock in each of them.

Expectations surrounding this potential mega-merger have been on the rise for most of 2026, and have further intensified since the listing of SpaceX. Musk stated that he himself has not joined any of these committees and that describing the merger as a fait accompli would be "exaggerated."

Meta claims that two high-loss businesses are expected to turn into cash cows
Meta indicates that some of its most costly businesses may finally start to turn a profit. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during the third-quarter earnings call on Wednesday that AI, which was launched last month, is still not profitable due to the "very intensive" computing power required to operate it. However, the company expects to reverse this situation next year by significantly improving efficiency. Zuckerberg also stated that the losses from Reality Labs will narrow to around $15 billion in 2027, lower than the estimated $18 to $19 billion for this year, and said that this division should begin to move towards profitability next year.

Canadian P2P crypto activity declines from a peak of 650,000 transactions, accompanied by a decrease in the number of student permits
A North American study released on October 14 by Chainalysis indicates that Canada's monthly peer-to-peer cryptocurrency transaction activity has declined from a peak of nearly 650,000 in the spring of 2024, in line with a decrease in the number of international student permits in the country. The study emphasizes that this is only a correlation at the group level and does not prove that international students are responsible for the decline in transactions. The article also mentions the costs of stablecoin remittances, restrictions on fiat currency payouts, as well as the progress of the Philippines' BPI in testing stablecoin settlements for overseas income.
