The Nasdaq Composite Index opened lower on Tuesday. U.S. stocks had generally risen on the previous trading day, but shares related to AI once again faced selling pressure.
The index with a concentrated technology weight fell by 0.4%, the S&P 500 index fell by 0.2%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average remained virtually unchanged.
Micron Technology and Sandisk both fell by about 3%; Seagate Technology, Intel, and AMD all fell by more than 2%. VanEck semiconductors ETF ( SMH ) fell by more than 1%, and CoreWeave tumbled by more than 4%.
South Korean AI company Elice tumbled by over 30% on its first day of trading after a night of listing, hitting tech stocks hard. With concerns about debt and demand on the rise, investors have been wondering recently whether the performance of the AI sector can continue.
During regular trading hours on Monday, the S&P 500 rose by 0.4%, and the Nasdaq Composite Index gained more than 1%. NVIDIA increased by 1.4%, Tesla soared by 3.8%, and Alphabet rose by about 1%.
This is a rebound following the sharp decline last week. Previously, there were concerns in the market that companies were heavily borrowing to invest in AI computing power construction, and the selling pressure spread to the broader market.
Jose Torres, a senior economist at Yingtou Securities, wrote: "Last Friday, on the eve of an intensifying wave of selling, the cost of volatility hedging soared during trading; now that market confidence in the tech sector's prospects has recovered, traders are withdrawing their hedging positions, and Wall Street can finally breathe a sigh of relief."
CoreWeave tumbled by over 25% last week. After Goldman Sachs raised its rating to 'buy', the stock tried to recover some of its losses, but the morning gains quickly faded, and it ultimately closed slightly lower.
