On Global Cat Day and National Feral Cat Day, we send a strong message to the world: cats are a part of the community™. They coexist with wild animals and should thrive wherever they live, said Coryn Julien, the project spokesperson for Alley Cat Allies. On October 16th, Alley Cat Allies will provide on-site services including trapping, spaying/neutering, rehoming (TNR), free cat food, medical care, and other essential support for cats. We call on advocates everywhere to join us in helping cats get the help they need where they live.
On October 15th and 16th, Alley Cat Allies will continue its work for cats around the world and carry out special activities at multiple locations: adding a free cat food distribution point in Richmond, Virginia; providing care and cat food for community cats in Prince George's County, Maryland; holding a TNR clinic in Granite Shoals, Texas; and providing life-saving medical care for cats in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
People around the world are encouraged to visit alleycat.org to learn about Global Cat Day and National Feral Cat Day, and to find ways to take action for cats. Actions that can be taken include organizing low-cost spaying and neutering clinics, conducting TNR in their communities, sharing educational materials about Alley Cat Allies on social media, discussing community cats and projects to protect them with local officials, and more.
Subsequently, on October 16th, initiators can take action within their own communities and use #GlobalCatDay and #NationalFeralCatDay to share their impact on social media.
Every year, cat advocates, caregivers, veterinarians, shelters, and animal protection organizations around the world commemorate World Cat Day and National Feral Cat Day by taking action to protect cats and promote humane and evidence-based care policies.
About Global Cat Day and National Feral Cat Day
Global Cat Day, established in 2017 by Alley Cat Allies, and National Feral Cat Day, founded in 2001, are celebrated on October 16th every year. These days are dedicated to raising awareness about cats and taking action for their welfare. The message they convey is simple yet powerful: Cats Are Community ™.
The meaning of Cats Are Community is to acknowledge the harmonious and balanced coexistence between cats and wildlife, including birds in environments around the world. It also signifies a continuous commitment to advocacy and action until all cities, towns, states, and countries have laws and resources that recognize and protect cats as members of their communities.
