Starknet is initiating a vote regarding the potential exit from Ethereum L2 and the transition to becoming an independent blockchain, due to quantum risks.
This Ethereum layer-2 network is seeking feedback from STRK holders regarding whether they should explore becoming an independent, post-quantum layer-1 blockchain.
On Thursday, Starknet launched a seven-day poll offering three options: to support further research, to oppose it, or to remain neutral until more information is available. The poll will end on October 22nd, and the results will be announced thereafter.
The “Yes” vote only indicates support for further research and does not authorize any migration. Subsequent steps will require additional proposals and governance votes, and there is currently no announced timeline for it to become “L1”.
The developer of Starknet, StarkWare, stated that this move may enable the network to advance quantum-resistant security without relying on the upgrade schedule of Ethereum. Starknet currently relies on Ethereum to provide infrastructure, including bridges and data availability; StarkWare believes that these are still dependencies for quantum security.
StarkWare Chief Executive Officer Eli Ben - Sasson told Cointelegraph: "It is urgent to provide quantum protection for cryptocurrencies, so we must move forward at lightning speed." He compared this proposal with the slower progress of Ethereum and Bitcoin as he described it.
Ben-Sasson and Starknet both hinted at this proposal on X on October 8th, describing it as an initiative to become the 'first fully quantum-resistant network' by 2027.
In June this year, StarkWare announced a three-phase quantum resistance roadmap for Starknet, which covers signature upgrades, smart contract migrations, and infrastructure that relies on Ethereum.
In March of this year, Ethereum developers established a dedicated post-quantum team with the goal of introducing preliminary protocol-level protections by 2029.
