“The Book of Squidly Light” wins the “Strange Book” category award at the international Firebird Book Award
The Sage Chronicles Series' second installment receives further recognition
Minneapolis, October 13th / PRNewswire / -- The second novel by author Karima Vargas Bushnell, titled The Book of Squidly Light, has just won the "Odd Book" category award at the international Firebird Book Award. Previously, this novel was recognized as a noteworthy independent book by Booklist magazine, which is part of the American Library Association.
The talented yet utterly confused protagonist Halycon Sage — that's indeed his name — is back! While the strange inhabitants of Dry Creek Gulch are happily organizing a peaceful, post-technological society, a huge Squidren emitting bright blue light is rapidly approaching Earth. These squid-like beings, capable of telepathy, time travel, and dimension jumping, have already made plans for us; the suddenly perceptive Nanobots and a Shadowy Man that specializes in exploiting human weaknesses also have their own agendas. Dimensions are constantly changing, the aliens are bizarre, and so are the people of Earth. There is love, hope, courage, and acceptance here — but there is also danger!
Bushnell represents: "I am deeply grateful for those awards that help make my books known to more people. Nowadays, encouraging people to read is as difficult as asking a cat to clean the house; however, those who do read often find surprise and pleasure in it."
Karima's main interest lies in boundaries: not physical boundaries, but spiritual, psychological, and emotional ones, the critical spaces between different worldviews where reality becomes negotiable. Her works are situated at the borders of vastly different cultures and worldviews. Her protagonist, Halycon Sage, is a typical character who crosses these boundaries; she says that many years after creating this character, she actually encountered the prototype of this mysterious author later on.
