News from the IT Home on October 12: According to a report by Beijing Daily, on October 11, the Yau Math and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Alliance was established at Tsinghua University. It will focus on research and development of large models dedicated to mathematical sciences, AI assisting in formal mathematical proofs and conjecture discovery, explainable artificial intelligence, and intelligent computing in interdisciplinary fields, aiming to promote deeper integration of AI with mathematics.
As previously reported by IT, OpenAI made public 722 mathematical research manuscripts at one time earlier this month. The content covers cutting-edge fields such as number theory, algebraic geometry, theoretical computer science, fluid mechanics, and statistical physics, and solved several long-standing mathematical problems, bringing a huge impact to the mathematical community.
Qiu Chengtong, the leader of the alliance and the dean of Tsinghua Qiuzhen Academy, spoke about his views on the development of mathematics in the AI era during the alliance's founding ceremony: "This forces us to rethink the essential value of mathematics, and it also requires us to surf in the AI wave, rather than hide away."
According to the introduction, the alliance has released more than 10 key achievements and research directions in the field of “AI + mathematics”, focusing on areas such as geometry, quantum computing, and life sciences. These include scientific issues such as the Degenerate Arnold Conjecture, the boundedness of minimal modifications, and the 7-dimensional homological sphere.
In the research conducted at the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center of Tsinghua University and the Shanghai Institute of Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Studies, titled "7-dimensional Homotopic Spheres: All Smooth Structures Can Support Sections with Positively Defined Curvature Everywhere," AI is used to assist in exploring proof strategies and simplifying calculations; computational algebraic systems are employed to verify precise identities, interval boundaries, and to generate reproducible computational certificates; mathematicians are responsible for conceiving and proving the theories, verifying results, and completing mathematical demonstrations and papers. Furthermore, AI also provides inspiration for scientists in solving other scientific problems and assists them with preliminary experimental calculations.
Yau Sze-tung stated that the alliance has gathered the strength of over 1,000 mathematicians and researchers. Together with institutions such as Tsinghua University's Qiuzhen Academy, Yau Sze-tung Center for Mathematical Sciences, Beijing Yanqi Lake Institute of Applied Mathematics, Chenxing Center for Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Institute of Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences, Southeast University Yau Sze-tung Center, Hetao Institute of Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences (Shenzhen), and The Chinese University of Hong Kong's Zhizhen Institute of Interdisciplinary Mathematics, they will provide cutting-edge guidance to young scholars and students. The alliance will also actively promote resource integration and explore a path for building large-scale mathematical models unique to China.
