A global shortage of memory and storage chips is dealing a heavy blow to the gaming industry. Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony have all raised the prices of their gaming consoles in order to offset the increase in component costs, as well as the impact of previous tariffs.
The price increase directly led to a significant decline in sales volume. Data from market research firm Circana shows that in August, sales of gaming hardware fell by 15% year-on-year, marking the lowest sales volume for August in 13 years.
Taking Sony’s PlayStation 5 as an example: the digital version without an optical drive was initially priced at $399 in November 2020; the version with an optical drive was priced at $499 at launch. The more powerful PS5 Pro first appeared in 2024 with a price of $699, and now its price has further increased.
Microsoft's Xbox Series S and Series X have also adopted similar price increase strategies. The initial selling price of Series S was $299.
Affected by President Trump's "Liberation Day" tariff policy last year, Nintendo also increased the selling price of its Switch 2 consoles.
Data from Circana indicates that gaming hardware spending declined by 3% in August, and cumulative spending for the year has decreased by 11% compared to the same period last year.
"We have already seen the negative impacts of increased host prices. The rise in the unit price of hosts has directly led to a decline in device shipments," explained Matt Piscatella, Executive Director of Gaming Business at Circana.
He added, "The current signs are still rather scattered, but we have observed that some products are out of stock, which is likely due to a crisis in the supply of memory and components."
Piscatella stated that the phenomenon of Sony PS5 Pro being in high demand is particularly prominent, with some second-hand consoles sold by retailers costing over $1000; however, it is not yet confirmed whether this phenomenon is directly caused by a shortage of memory storage chips.
At least for Sony and Microsoft, there is a key question at hand: what impact will all of this have on the release of Take-Two's GTA6. As a highly anticipated entertainment masterpiece in history, it is widely believed that GTA6 will encourage a group of consumers who were on the sidelines to purchase gaming consoles.
However, the high cost of hosts may deter potential buyers.
"I guess quite a few of those consumers who haven't managed to get their hands on a console of this generation yet still think that they can just spend $200 at a store and take home a gaming machine. But the reality is that to play this blockbuster game, the console costs $600, $700, $800, or even $900," said Piscatella.
"Even if there is stock on the shelves, such a price disparity will still have a huge impact on consumers. I believe that the release of the game will indeed lead to an increase in sales to some extent, but there are simply too many factors involved behind it."
