Solana plans to reduce the target block time from 250 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds on Friday, completing a series of reductions since August. This upgrade will increase the block generation frequency while lowering the computational limit for each block, in order to maintain roughly the same overall processing capacity.

Solana is currently completing a seven-week initiative aimed at doubling the block generation frequency, but verifiers will face higher costs and tighter operating windows as a result.

Solana plans to reduce the target block time from 250 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds at epoch on Friday, completing a series of reductions that started from 400 milliseconds in August.

This upgrade will give the network five opportunities to generate blocks per second, which may speed up transaction updates. At the same time, the computational limit for each block will be reduced to maintain an overall processing capacity that remains roughly the same.

Faster blocks may reduce transaction delays and arbitrage opportunities, but they also increase the demand for validator votes, put more pressure on network connections, and shorten the effective window for transactions.

Solana is preparing to reduce the block interval to 200 milliseconds on Friday, completing a series of upgrades that have halved the target block time of the network since August.

According to Anza, the developer of the verifier software that is widely used with Agave, the last reduction will be from 250 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds, which is scheduled to take effect on epoch at 10:53 AM, with an estimated time of around UTC at 3:00 PM.

This change will allow the blockchain to have a target of five block generation opportunities per second, whereas with the initial configuration of 400 milliseconds, it was 2.5 times per second.

slot is a short period of time during which designated validators can add transactions to the blockchain. A shorter slot means that transaction applications, wallets, and exchanges can receive updated information more frequently, thereby reducing the waiting time for submitted transactions to be processed.

These changes began on August 21st, when Solana reduced the block time to 350 milliseconds, and then further reduced it to 300 milliseconds on August 28th and to 250 milliseconds on September 18th.

This technical proposal, named SIMD-0525, also limits the amount of computational work that verifiers can insert into each block.

At a configuration of 200 milliseconds, each block can carry up to 30 million compute units. When the configuration is lower than 250 milliseconds, it can carry up to 37.5 million. Blocks arrive more frequently, but the workload carried by each block is reduced proportionally, allowing the network's theoretical processing capacity to remain roughly unchanged.

Verifiers will continue to produce blocks in groups of four consecutive slot. As a result, the window for processing transactions without interruption will be reduced from the initial configuration of 1.6 seconds to 800 milliseconds.

This may reduce the chances of delayed transactions or taking advantage of price changes on other exchanges that Solana has not yet caught up with.

Faster clocks also come with a cost. Each validator that submits a vote for each slot will need to vote at approximately twice the original frequency, which will increase voting costs and put greater pressure on network connections.

wallet and other applications will also have less time to use the latest blockhash; blockhash is a reference included in transactions to prevent transactions from being replayed. A shorter valid window may make transactions that require manual approval or offline signing more complicated.

Actual network performance remains to be tested.

Data from Solana Compass shows that the average slot time for the configuration over the previous 250 milliseconds is around 266 to 269 milliseconds in the recent epoch, which is slightly slower than the target value.

The final downgrade has been deployed to Solana's testnet and devnet. Developers stated that the mainnet deployment depends on network conditions, especially the frequency at which validators miss their designated block generation opportunities.

It is expected that this switch will occur at the epoch 1053 boundary on Friday.
