Araceli Biosciences and Ginkgo Bioworks introduce large-scale cell imaging into the Nebula laboratory
Araceli Biosciences and Ginkgo Bioworks ( NYSE : DNA ) announced on Thursday that they have integrated the Endeavor ® high-content imager from Araceli into their autonomous laboratory Nebula located in Boston. Araceli claimed that this Endeavor is the fastest high-content imaging system in the world, capable of bringing real-time analysis cell imaging capabilities into Nebula existing technologies, providing researchers with large, organized datasets necessary for training and validating AI models in drug discovery.
Nebula is built upon Ginkgo's Reconfigurable Automation Carts ( RACs ). Each RAC serves as a modular unit that integrates robotic arms, automatic sample transfer, and unified control software, allowing for the addition or rearrangement of instruments as work processes change. Ginkgo indicates that dozens of scientists use over 100 RAC on Nebula to conduct real research every day, submit experimental procedures, and receive data the following day. Nebula can autonomously and concurrently complete the work of numerous scientists, operating day and night, and occupies approximately one-third of the space required by traditional laboratories.
Endeavor is capable of completing imaging of a 1536-well plate in less than four minutes, and has been integrated into the system based on RAC known as Nebula. It operates in sync with 24/7 experiments. In conjunction with the ClaireRT ™ software from Araceli, Endeavor analyzes each well during image collection. If a well does not meet the preset standards, the system can alert the operator or Nebula, or pause the imaging process to allow for issue resolution before the experiment continues.
Araceli Biosciences President and CEO, Matt Beaudet, stated: "Next-generation drug discovery AI requires a completely different scale of biological data. The laboratories themselves are evolving. They now generate cell data, interpret what they see, and respond in real time. Ginkgo is achieving this through Nebula, while Araceli brings high-content imaging and real-time analysis on a large scale into this closed loop."
Ginkgo Bioworks, co-founder and CEO, and Jason Kelly stated: "With each additional first-class instrument added to an independent laboratory, its value increases. Once one has their own independent laboratory, any scientist can utilize Endeavor's top-tier imaging capabilities and seamlessly integrate them with all other instruments. This is the value of an independent laboratory: combining the best tools in the field of biology with the same software set to conduct experiments 24/7."
