Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners invests in Italian biomethane platform Via Verde
The investment in the Via Verde platform marks the entry of Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, abbreviated as CIP) into the Italian biomethane market. This platform has a development pipeline of 20 biomethane projects.
Copenhagen, Denmark, October 7, 2026 / PRNewswire / — Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners ( CIP ) announced that it has made a final investment decision ( FID ) in the Italian biomethane platform Via Verde through Advanced Bioenergy Fund II ( ABF II ). ABF II primarily invests in the development, construction, and operation of biogas plants in Europe, converting agricultural waste and other sustainable materials into biomethane.
Via Verde is the first investment of ABF II, and it also marks the entry of CIP into the Italian biomethane market. The company stated that this investment will create local jobs and supply locally produced biomethane to replace imported fossil natural gas, thereby supporting Italy's efforts to enhance energy independence and advance decarbonization.
Via Verde encompasses a development pipeline of 20 projects, strategically distributed across multiple regions of Italy, including Lombardy, Abruzzo, and Campania. It is estimated that each plant will process approximately 60,000 to 100,000 tons of agricultural waste per year.
After all 20 of these projects are put into operation, the Via Verde platform is expected to supply approximately 1 terawatt-hour of biomethane per year, which is equivalent to the annual natural gas consumption of about 60,000 Italian households.
Partners Andreas F and Brandt said regarding this new investment: “Via Verde marks our entry into one of Europe’s most attractive biomethane markets, putting us in a favorable position as Italy expands towards its biomethane targets by 2030. CIP will leverage its expertise in the field of advanced bioenergy to support Via Verde’s experienced local team and their extensive project portfolio, laying a solid foundation for long-term growth. We believe that biomethane will play a key role in enhancing Italy’s energy independence and supporting its transition to a lower-carbon energy system.”
The company stated that, with favorable market fundamentals and policy support mechanisms in place, Via Verde is expected to establish a significant presence in the Italian biomethane market as soon as possible and to support the expansion of local renewable gas production capacity.
