HigherVisibility Analysis: Google's AI Fact-Checking Rules Now Cover Metadata

HigherVisibility releases a line-by-line analysis of Google's revision on October 1st to the official guidelines for AI content generation, stating that the most important change is not the much-discussed requirement of "manual verification of AI content before publication," but rather that this requirement now explicitly applies to title elements, meta-descriptions, structured data, and images alt text. The article also points out that earlier reports mistakenly identified the requirement in Merchant Center to add IPTC metadata to AI generated product images as part of this update, when in fact, this requirement has been in effect since at least May 2025.

Memphis, Tennessee, October 2nd / PRNewswire / -- HigherVisibility, a digital marketing agency headquartered in Memphis, released a line-by-line analysis today, interpreting the revisions made by Google on its official guidelines for AI generated content on October 1st. This is the first change to the document in over a year. Based on a direct comparison with archived versions of the page, the analysis found that the most significant modification was not the one emphasized by the headlines.

Most reports focus on Google's new requirement, which is that it is "crucial" to manually verify the facts of all AI generated content before publication. A comparison of the differences in HigherVisibility shows that the following sentence rewrites the scope of application for this obligation: Manual review now applies to title elements, meta-descriptions, structured data, and alt text images. These four types of metadata are precisely the parts of e-commerce catalogs, programmatic SEO construction, and agency content processes that are most often automatically generated and often not read by anyone.

This timing also adds weight to the revision. This update falls on the 8th day of Google's spam content updates in September 2026; it is Google's first push this year that is estimated to potentially last "up to two weeks." The previous three spam content updates this year all concluded within three days. In the same week, Google's research department published a paper introducing SAFE – a multi-agent system used for large-scale investigation of coordinated synthetic content, which was quickly shared by industry insiders within just a few hours.

HigherVisibility Managing Partner Adam Heitzman stated: "Google has just laid down the standards it will refer to when issues arise. If a plugin or template writes the title, description, schema, or alt text for you, and no one reads the output result, then this guide now specifically targets this workflow. The fix is not complicated, but it must be completed before release, not after."

This analysis also corrected a mistake that was prevalent in earlier reports: The requirement that Merchant Center should add IPTC metadata to the product images generated by AI is not part of this update. This provision has been in effect since at least May 2025 and has not changed since then; however, it has not yet been widely implemented. Now, it is located just below the section that Google has just reinforced.

This published content includes a complete comparison of the differences before and after the revision, a rolling comparison table of the four updates to junk content in 2026, as well as a five-step audit process for the aforementioned four types of metadata. Suggested measures include: sampling the generated titles to compare them with the corresponding pages, running a report on duplicate descriptions for the main templates, and verifying structured data in Google Rich Results Test.

This revision does not prohibit the content of AI, nor does it announce any new penalties. The document still describes generative AI as a useful tool for research and organizational structuring, while Google's spam content policy continues to target large-scale content that does not add value, regardless of how it is generated.

Non-farm payroll data came as a cold shock, dampening expectations for interest rate hikes; U.S. stocks continued to rise, NVIDIA hit a new high during trading; U.S. Treasury yields formed a V-shape. G7's reserve release dealt a heavy blow to crude oil prices, and gold and silver tumbled throughout the week.
U.S. non-farm employment cooled unexpectedly in September, leading to a decline in market expectations for the Federal Reserve's short-term interest rate hikes. This drove U.S. stocks higher and the dollar weaker, but U.S. Treasury yields quickly rebounded after a short-term drop. Meanwhile, G7 announced the release of 100 million barrels of oil and petroleum product reserves, causing international oil prices to plummet during trading hours, and gold and silver also continued to fall sharply this week.
