The company is researching how AI agents can surpass conventional dialogue and safely perform routine medical tasks.
San Francisco, October 1st / PRNewswire / -- The medical industry can perform robotic surgeries, sequence genomes, and monitor hearts through wristwatches. However, adjusting appointments, transferring prescriptions for refills, coordinating referrals, or resolving insurance issues may still require making phone calls, transferring information, and performing manual updates across different systems.
This is not because the healthcare industry lacks software. Over the past 20 years, the healthcare industry has to a large extent become digitalized. However, digitizing work processes does not equate to automating them.
Medical institutions operate on electronic health record systems ( EHR ), scheduling systems, billing platforms, patient portals, and other applications, each surrounded by privacy requirements, security controls, and integration limitations. As a result, there is often more software in use, but it is still people who actually carry out the work, handling tasks back and forth between these software systems.
MontoHealth is filling this gap.
Rather than adding another new system that requires operation for the medical team, MontoHealth is developing an action layer that can run across existing systems – it is capable of understanding requests, coordinating workflows, and performing permitted operations within established boundaries.
The goal is not to create another dashboard, but to reduce the workload between dashboards.
Start by communicating with the patient
MontoHealth Start with common patient interactions, including appointments, prescription refills, referrals, billing and insurance issues, requests outside of business hours, and multilingual communication.
But the conversation is just the starting point. When patients request to reschedule or follow up on referrals, corresponding actions must be taken behind the scenes. MontoHealth is researching how AI agents can advance these tasks between connected systems, and introduces clear permissions and human involvement when judgment or approval is required.
Wider research has also extended to the fields of medical operations, data, and research, exploring how specialized agents can work together without allowing any single system to have unrestricted access or control. MontoHealth is still in the active development phase, and a limited number of medical institutions have been invited to join its Founding Physician Pilot Program to test early capabilities and help shape the focus for the platform's next steps.
