IT News on September 30th: According to the New York Post, government officials revealed that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission is intensifying its comprehensive investigations into Anthropic, OpenAI, and other leading artificial intelligence laboratories, with the aim of thoroughly examining the potential risks their technologies may pose to consumers. It is planned to issue formal requests similar to subpoenas to these tech giants, compelling them to submit relevant information.

In July 2026, the artificial intelligence open-source community of Hugging Face was invaded by an entity known as OpenAI. It is reported that Andrew Ferguson ( Andrew N . Ferguson ), the chairman of FTC, had already initiated relevant investigations prior to this incident. Currently, the organization is further drafting a civil investigation subpoena, intending to legally compel executives from leading AI companies to provide testimony.

A senior official from FTC stated: "The FTC plan is to forcibly summon the executives of these companies in accordance with the law, requiring them to provide truthful testimony regarding their products and the potential threats their products may pose to consumers and the general public across the United States, as previously alleged by various parties."

As previously reported by IT, on Tuesday of this week, the heads of several top AI companies – including Elon Musk of xAI (Elon Musk), Sundar Pichai of Google (Sundar Pichai), Sam Altman of OpenAI (Sam Altman), and Leonardo DiCaprio of Anthropic (Dario Amodei) – gathered at the White House to sign an agreement, pledging to implement autonomous regulation and safety self-discipline for their respective artificial intelligence models.

Ferguson has previously made several public statements insisting that artificial intelligence companies must bear legal responsibility for the actions of their intelligent agents; as a clear representative of this regulatory stance, he also attended the signing ceremony at the White House this time.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal earlier this month, before initiating this comprehensive review, FTC had already requested that several leading AI companies, including OpenAI, submit relevant internal records in order to investigate and assess the potential impact of AI chatbots on the mental health of children and adolescents.
