I didn't plan to write about AMD for two consecutive days, but sometimes news has its own plans. Yesterday, this AI chip manufacturer disclosed that it will acquire World Labs for $8.2 billion.

If you haven't been following all the individuals behind these companies, AMD is led by CEO Lisa Su, while World Labs was co-founded by Li Feifei, who is also known as the "godmother" of AI. This makes this transaction an extremely rare one in the AI industry, as both parties to the deal are two of the top women in that field. Su ranked 3rd on this year's list of "Most Influential Women," and Li ranked 45th.

World Labs is a two-year-old startup that is developing AI for the physical world. As my colleague Alexei Oreskovic explained, its model is “trained using data such as videos that depict the three-dimensional physical world... to create AI that can understand how objects move in the physical world.” This will help AI to be extended to objects such as humanoid robots. World Labs has already raised $1 billion in funding for this mission.

AMD and World Labs established a "deep technical partnership" last year – which also helps AMD compete with NVIDIA, the latter of which is also developing AI for the physical world. Now, Li Feifei will take on the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist at AMD, reporting directly to Su.

Li and Su marked this moment with a group photo: the two of them sitting at a table, smiling as they signed the terms of the deal. As we venture into the unknown waters of the AI competition, this photo will remain in my memory forever. We've become so accustomed to seeing the AI technical bureaucrats gathered together – Sam Altman, Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai appearing at the White House alongside President Trump.

And what is presented here is another path. Women are no longer the exception in those situations (Su has also participated in many such occasions), but are designing their own futures. They stand at the top, making decisions, rather than merely occupying that familiar second-tier role.

Last week, AMD became the first company with a market value of over $1 trillion to be led by a female CEO. Through this transaction, we get a glimpse of how Su utilizes this power: identifying the best opportunities for its business at the CEO level, and at the same time, it shows us another version of the AI industry – in this version, it is not just a handful of white male oligarchs who determine the fate of humanity.

More AI news you need to know. The S-1 documents of Anthropic have been leaked. According to a document seen by Reuters, this company, co-founded by Daniela Amodei and about to file for IPO, has revenues of $4.6 billion and is expected to spend $518 billion in the future on computing, cloud, and infrastructure. Its risk statement certainly includes "risks to human existence."

It has become a foregone conclusion that the investigation into Cornell by New York State will be restarted. The local prosecutor of Tompkins County, Matthew Van Houten, stated that he will submit the cases against 7 members of the Chi Phi fraternity to a grand jury. These members are accused of being involved in a gang rape case in 2024 and may face criminal charges.

Senators are trying to prevent Trump from recovering federal funds. The chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Republican Senator from Maine Susan Collins, stated that the committee will look for “language that we can include in the next round of appropriation bills to prevent such situations from occurring.” Previously, the president had already repossessed $810 million in federal funds that had been allocated to various projects.

The people behind Victoria's Secret. The CEO, Hillary Super, has been driving the transformation of Victoria's Secret, but the core figure of its strategy is the current Chief Creative Officer, Adam Selman. Selman joined Victoria's Secret with Super from Rihanna's brand Savage X Fenty (he also appeared in my feature article earlier this year). As a veteran Victoria's Secret model, Paloma Elsesser said, "He retains that sense of fun and sexiness, but now there's also a greater sense of security."
