At its annual Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm launched two flagship mobile phone processors: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The company focused this upgrade on the AI capabilities of the devices, aiming to enable phones to perform more personal assistant and voice interaction tasks locally.
Enhancement of client-side model capabilities
The new chip incorporates new sensing and hub, enabling it to run small models with up to 200 million parameters. Qualcomm states that this means phones can locally maintain personal records, distinguish between different speakers, and generate memories based on usage habits, providing more user-friendly automated suggestions. The company also mentioned that the new chip supports full voice input and voice output capabilities.
The premium version allows for the local execution of larger models.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen It is also possible to run a hybrid expert model with 30 billion parameters locally. Qualcomm claims that the new acceleration unit built into the chip allows the model to perform tasks more efficiently. In contrast, in Apple's third-generation base model released in June this year, the most advanced version is the MoE model with 20 billion parameters.
Simultaneous upgrade of imaging and call functions
In addition to AI, Qualcomm has also enhanced image processing. The new CPU supports pixel-level camera control, improving shake reduction and motion recognition capabilities. The Extreme version supports 8K 60fps and 4K 240fps video recording, and includes a APV codec. Both chips can also use AI to enhance vocals and reduce noise, and through new voice and bubble technologies, they can isolate ambient noise during calls.
