Foreign media reports that a former executive of Palantir believes that many companies misuse the role of FDE, turning the product delivery role into an extension of sales, which instead exposes insufficient product matching.

Foreign media: A former executive who was in charge of the Palantir rotational frontline deployment engineer project stated that more and more companies are misusing the position of FDE (frontline deployment engineer), turning it from a bridge between products and customers into an extension of sales, marketing, or customer success.

Vinoo Ganesh is currently Kepler CEO. In the 2010s, he worked at Palantir for over six years before joining Citadel. In an interview with Business Insider, he recalled that Palantir had a rotation program called Project Frontline back then. The purpose of this program was to allow software engineers to spend a short period of time on the front lines with clients, so they could understand the work rhythm of the frontline teams before returning to their product development roles.

Rotating projects connect products with customers.

According to him, the frontline deployment engineers, represented by Palantir, acted quickly at that time and were very close to the clients; whereas the core software engineering team was clearly distanced from this sense of urgency in terms of geographical location and work culture. The purpose of the rotation project was to enable these two types of engineers to understand each other's working methods.

Participants usually work in different locations for several months and receive support from two management lines simultaneously: one from the frontline deployment engineering team and the other from the software engineering team. Ganesh states that this arrangement has received positive feedback internally; some people eventually stayed in the FDE positions, while others returned to traditional software engineering roles.

He also mentioned that he later encountered similar patterns at Citadel, although the target audience was different. FDE at Palantir is mainly aimed at external customers, while Citadel's so-called “business engineering” serves more investment managers and analysts within the company. The goal remains to provide front-line feedback to the core product team.

Core responsibilities should not become sales.

Ganesh believes that the essence of FDE is an extension of the product team. Its focus is not merely to facilitate transactions, but rather to help the company gain product insights by solving specific problems, which in turn can feed back into subsequent development.

He criticized that some companies are now using FDE as a "safety net" position, even designing it directly as a sales engineer role with performance targets. In his view, this approach is not accurate, as it tends to shift the focus of the position from improving the product to forcibly promoting the use of products that have not yet truly solved customer pain points.

In his judgment, some companies expand the functions of FDE because the match between their products and the market is still not stable. As a result, they attempt to compensate for the inherent issues of their products by involving more human intervention. He believes that this will cause FDE to lose its original value in terms of product feedback.

Palantir mode relies on platform-based products

Ganesh also indicates that the product form of Palantir itself is suitable for the operation of the FDE system. Since it provides a horizontal platform that can cover multiple industries, frontline deployment engineers are responsible for implementing the platform capabilities in different industries and scenarios to create more specific vertical applications.

He reminded his peers based on this that before setting up a FDE position, it is necessary to first determine whether one's own product is truly suitable for such an organizational approach. If the position is merely intended to push the product to more users, or if the scope of use is forcibly expanded before the user pain points are clearly identified, the long-term results may not be ideal.

Ganesh believes that as writing code itself becomes less of a differentiator, the focus of competition in software engineering will increasingly shift towards understanding customer needs. For this reason, he also views FDE as a working method, rather than just a job title.
