OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT's health features from the testing phase to a wider audience. Starting this week, registered US users can access the feature on the web and iOS, across the free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans.
Testing began in January.
In January of this year, OpenAI first tested this service through a separate health portal. Users can access data from platforms such as Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, and Function, and can also import personal records from medical systems or health platforms such as Epic, Oracle Health, One Medical, and Function Health.
No longer limited to independent entrances
Previously, users needed to access a dedicated health page to ask questions. Now, connected health information can be accessed in all conversations. When users ask questions about diet, allergies, etc., in regular chat, ChatGPT can provide answers by combining information from the health page.
OpenAI stated that during testing, approximately 70% of health-related questions did not occur within the separate entry point. This is one of the reasons the company expanded the feature to the general chat interface.
Still not used for diagnosis and treatment
OpenAI also stated that the model's performance in health-related questions has improved. The company claims that GPT 5.6-Luna, a smaller version of the latest generation model, outperforms GPT 5.5 in its self-built HealthBench health question-answering benchmark.
However, OpenAI emphasizes in its terms of service that the services are not intended for the diagnosis or treatment of any health condition. The company also states that it will not use user data to train models and is collaborating with doctors to improve the safety of health-related answers.
The reliability of AI-powered medical advice has been a subject of ongoing debate. Multiple studies have indicated that AI chatbots are not suitable as a reliable source of medical advice. However, companies like Anthropic and Google have recently been advancing similar health features, and related scenarios are becoming a new competitive arena for generative AI.
