AI Progress Made in Animal Experiments for Assistive Design of Avian Influenza Vaccine

According to CoinMeta, the University of Cambridge in the UK recently issued a statement stating that a new type of broad-spectrum avian influenza vaccine designed by the university’s team using artificial intelligence (AI) demonstrated protective efficacy against various strains of avian influenza viruses in animal experiments. This candidate vaccine was jointly developed by the University of Cambridge and its spin-off companies. Researchers collected gene sequence data of avian influenza viruses recorded from global surveillance projects and used AI tools for integrated analysis to design a series of “superantigens” that contain common antigenic features of these viruses. Experiments showed that mice and ferrets vaccinated with the new vaccine survived after being attacked by various strains of avian influenza viruses with different genetic characteristics, while only about half of the animals in the control group, which were vaccinated with existing avian influenza vaccines, survived. The study’s leader, Professor Jonathan Hickey from the University of Cambridge, stated that the new vaccine is intended to provide broad-spectrum protection against multiple strains of avian influenza viruses in order to address the challenges posed by viral evolution.
