CZ: Warning about a OpenSSH vulnerability that has not been fixed for 10 years
2026-11-06 16:59:08
According to CoinMeta, Zhao Changpeng (CZ), the founder of Binance, warned server operators that there is a critical authentication vulnerability in OpenSSH that affects certain Alpine Linux systems, calling on them to install security patches. This vulnerability has existed for nearly 10 years, and OpenSSH and Alpine Linux released fixes on November 5th. The vulnerability may allow attackers to access certain accounts without knowing the passwords, including those configured to only accept SSH keys. In a tweet on November 6th, CZ mentioned, 'The Alpine Linux OpenSSH security vulnerability has been around for 10 years; please apply the patch as soon as possible if it hasn't been fixed.' This vulnerability affects OpenSSH systems that do not use pluggable authentication modules (PAM), and under the condition where password authentication is still enabled, attackers can exploit specific circumstances to bypass authentication.
