U.S. elections affect copper prices; the demand for AI and the prospects for tariffs remain uncertain

According to CoinMeta, as reported by FirstSquawk, copper prices have fallen due to the uncertainty surrounding the U.S. elections, dropping to their lowest level since July. The price of copper on the London Metal Exchange has plummeted to around $13,642 per ton, a decrease of 1.5%. This decline reflects two main factors that political changes could weaken: expanded AI infrastructure investment and the possibility of higher U.S. import tariffs. A widespread sell-off in tech stocks has also increased risk aversion in the industrial metals market. The Democrats' control of Congress has reduced aggressive expectations for U.S. copper tariffs, which may ease the price premium for U.S. copper and encourage metal to flow into the global market. Concerns about a slowdown in AI related investments and a tightening financial environment are further putting pressure on prices. However, the physical copper market still shows tight supply, with the domestic copper premium in China rising to over 2,500 yuan per ton, the highest level since 2015.
