According to CoinMeta, and as reported by the Financial Times, Iranian-related vessels have been hovering near the Strait of Hormuz, potentially posing a threat to critical undersea internet cables. A maritime intelligence company Windward has detected unusual activities of at least four vessels in the Gulf of Oman, including three sanctioned oil tankers. These vessels have slowed down, circled around the cable routes, or disabled tracking systems. The internet, financial transactions, cloud services, and artificial intelligence infrastructure in the region rely on these connections. Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar are completely dependent on the cables passing through the Strait of Hormuz for internet connectivity. Damage to these cables could disrupt payments, communications, and online services, threatening the region's efforts to become a global technology hub. Iran has threatened that if the United States and Israel resume attacks, they will target the cables and data centers. Windward indicates that these activities may indicate preparations for sabotage, but no attacks on the cables or the placement of explosives have yet been confirmed.
