ChatGPT Becomes an Accomplice to Murder? Man Accuses His Wife of Planning to Poison Him with AI

According to CoinMeta, a man from North Carolina, USA, identified as James Gates, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, accusing ChatGPT of fueling his wife Cheryl's suspicions about him and helping her devise a poisoning plan. The indictment states that Cheryl began using ChatGPT frequently in early 2025, suspecting that her husband was monitoring her, and ChatGPT further intensified these suspicions. The conversation escalated into a specific poisoning plan, with at least 25 rounds of discussions regarding the dosage of the poison and beverages to mask its taste. In July 2025, James began to feel severely unwell, and in September, handwritten notes by his wife were discovered listing the poison and dosages, which also mentioned "erasing all conversations" and "getting out of ChatGPT." Subsequently, the police obtained chat records from OpenAI with a search warrant. Cheryl was charged with attempted murder in October 2025, but the prosecution dropped the case in April 2026 due to insufficient evidence. James believes that OpenAI failed to prevent the dangerous conversations from escalating and claims to have suffered physical and mental harm due to his wife's conversations with AI. OpenAI responded by stating that they had banned Cheryl's account and provided investigation information to law enforcement authorities.
