Iranian attacks threaten Gulf aviation hubs; billions of dollars in infrastructure investments face scrutiny

According to CoinMeta, attacks in Iran threaten the aviation hubs in the Gulf region, and billions of dollars in infrastructure investments are at risk. Gulf countries have invested heavily in building global aviation hubs, aiming to leverage their geographical advantage as a link between Europe and Asia to become international aviation and commercial centers. However, missile and drone attacks have turned this advantage into a security threat. Data from the conflict monitoring organization ACLED shows that airports in all Gulf countries, except Oman, have been attacked, with at least 28 incidents of projectiles hitting airports or nearby areas. Passenger traffic at some airports has decreased by about one-third this year. The Houthi rebels recently launched at least 20 projectiles at Riyadh International Airport, and Iran has also threatened to strike Gulf economies and civilian infrastructure. These attacks have led several international airlines to extend their flight suspensions, and airport expansion projects have also been affected. Dubai is still advancing its $35 billion expansion plan for Al Maktoum International Airport, with the first phase expected to open in 2032, while Saudi Arabia's newly built King Salman International Airport may face delays, with some construction work halted due to Houthi attacks.
